WEEI/Boston Announces Game Day Football Line-Up

The WEEI Sports Radio Network, based at WEEI-AM/Boston, revealed Wednesday that its game day football programming line-up will kick off September 13 with the initial edition of “NFL Sunday.”

The “NFL Sunday” football pre-game show airs from 9am-12noon with Dale Arnold, Michael Holley, former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria and WEEI.com’s Chris Price.

“The Real Post Game Show” with Pete Sheppard, Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie will begin immediately following Patriots games, giving listeners their first opportunity to react and discuss how the team performed. Listeners will also hear the press conferences of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, as well as highlights from the game and from games around the league.

“WEEI has always provided the most complete and comprehensive coverage of the Patriots and this year will be no exception. I’m thrilled that we have been able to secure such a robust line-up featuring Dale, Holley, Christian and Chris before the game; and Pete, Fred and Steve after the game,” said VP/AM Programming Jason Wolfe. Listen to the Pats this football season – “Lets take a time on the Patriots 98.5 Sports Hub radio network.”

It sounds like a mouthful for the longtime voice for the New England Patriots, Gil Santos. But, for loyal fans of the team, the recent switchover from 104.1 WBCN-FM to 98.5 (WBZ-FM) could possibly leave many in the dark as far as where to tune in.

Last month, after years of declining ratings, WBCN, or “The Rock of Boston,” announced that they would be signing off, while Mix 98.5 (WBMX-FM) took over WBCN’s frequency at 104.1, as 98.5 became known as “The Sports Hub.” In addition to the Patriots, the new sports hub also announced that they’ve added the Boston Bruins to their lineup. Up until this past season, the Bruins, were most notably heard on the sports hub’s sister station, WBZ 1030 AM.

Confusing? One could make that assessment. But what else remains unclear is the assumption that having the Patriots and Bruins on one station, will automatically prove to be a winner in the ratings. But legacy sports station WEEI 850 AM, which carries both the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics dropped to a 3.7 rating in July, down from 5.1 back in May, according to arbitron.com.

So, for now, it’s really hard to say if having two of the areas most popular teams on one station will automatically mean success. But in fact, a month after one of the most elaborate frequency (and format) switchover’s in Boston radio history, fans will most likely still be left befuddled. Someone who normally tunes into 104.1 FM to hear Toucher and Rich (now on 98.5) and Patriots football, will still be trying to get used to the concept of hearing Kelly Clarkson on that station.

And while the reality of 104.1 going all Top 40, is sacrilege to some, others might argue that the switchover was a necessity. With the lineup of Toucher and Rich, Gary Tanguay, Scott Zolak, and Tony Massarotti, there are those in Boston radio who are banking on the new 98.5 being at hit. Given the most recent success of teams like the Patriots and Bruins, it almost seems like a no brainer to have both teams on that one station. And with the acquisition of Toucher and Rich from WBCN, one would think that this would be a win-win for the sports hub.

Yet, in a town that is already saturated in sports talk, only time (and next month’s arbitron ratings) will tell if this new venture into FM jock talk is a slam dunk, or just pure overkill.

Fear Not Patriots’ Fans, Brady To Moss Is Okay

So basically everyone now is hearing about how Tom Brady was “hurt” last night by Albert Haynesworth “hit.”

Let me first say that there is absolutely no need for defensive players to be following through like that on quarterbacks. It may seem that I am biased in this opinion, considering I am a Patriots fan, and obviously am sensitive about Brady’s health.

Earlier in the game, Vince Wilfork made a similar hit on Jason Campbell, and my first reaction was to say, “what are you doing, Vince!”

Tom Brady is going to decimate all this year, as evidence by his clicking with Wide Receiver Randy Moss last night, when he was 12 of 19, throwing 150 yards and 2 TDs in two quarters. Both touchdowns were to Moss on two picture perfect plays.

With that said, we may not see Tom Brady next week, but know that this isn’t going to keep him from embarrassing the Bills on Monday Night Football in a couple weeks. Here is why:

He reached out with his right arm to be picked up.
He swirled his arm around on the sideline afterward.
He was throwing the ball around as well. Showing no pain or grimace on his face.
The Patriots actually said something about it: “sore shoulder.” This is a good, considering they would have had no comment had it been serious.
Chad Johnson Tweeted how he got a message back from Brady saying he was fine (they’re friends).
Bill Belichick said today, “Tom had a desire to play, but we made a football decision to play other players because I think we need to see them at that position, and make an evaluation there. That’s what I’m saying.”
Tom is scheduled to make a radio appearance on WEEI on Monday, and in my opinion, had it been really serious this would not be happening.
Brady has been listed as “Probable-Shoulder” ever since he hurt that same shoulder back in 2002, and look what he had done since then.
Former Patriot quarterback Drew Bledsoe had a similar injury which only kept him out for two weeks.
Perhaps worrying about his shoulder, will help keep his mind of his knee and actually help him overall.

Fear not Patriots fans, this is only a troubled time for every Patriots opponent this year, considering Brady to Moss is in high gear yet again.
